§ 24-176. Removal of abandoned, unmaintained, unused or unnecessary crossings.

  • (a)

    Any sidewalk crossing which is abandoned, unused or unnecessary, in the opinion of the Director of Public Works, shall be removed by the owner of the land to which the crossing is appurtenant, and the curb and sidewalk shall be restored within 30 days after the Director of Public Works has given written notice to the landowner directing such removal and restoration. The curb and sidewalk paving shall be restored in a manner and with materials to be approved by the Director of Public Works. All work shall be done at the expense of the landowner.

    (b)

    The Director of Public Works may determine that a sidewalk crossing, in the form of a carriage walk or carriage steps, is unnecessary or is in a state of disrepair that may present a hazard to pedestrians. The Department may remove any such crossing at will in the interest of public safety. A property owner may request that the Department of Public Works remove an existing carriage walk or carriage steps. The City will remove at no cost to the property owner and restore the affected area to its design condition.
